(.s.m.o.g.). - 'a.c.c.u.m.u.l.a.t.i.o.n.: n.o.n.e.' (2002)
this is a collection of singles and b-sides and rarities of the music of b.i.l.l. c.a.l.l.a.h.a.n. aka s.m.o.g.. the other day i was feeling romantic and i started singing one of these songs. my wife wasn't familiar. we played some of this record via youtube and she was quickly hooked. she'd been listening to this every day for several days on youtube. i had one way or another lost my copy, as it had become for me one of those records that i listened to so many times way back when that i had almost worn it out. finding a good quality copy encoded at 320kbps was not easy, but in the end proved possible. i now present it to you, dear listeners, as i believe this to be one of this artist's finer records in his extensive catalogue. my anaconda don't want none unless you've got buns, hun.

t.a.r.a. j.a.n.e. o'.n.e.i.l. - s/t (2017)
been into tara jane's music since the 90s. she was the bassist for rodan, my favorite band of the 90s in the 90s. she played in the sonora pine, also an incredible band. and a band called retsin, who i was into as well way back when. she starred in this really silly slacker film called half cocked, which, does not stand the test of time, i can tell you. i tried to watch it recently and groaned my head off, so i had to shut it off. anyway, she's made a whole bunch of solo records over the years. i kinda stopped following her for a while, for the same reasons i burned out on bill callahan and will oldham and company. i just felt like bummer singer songwriter stuff had sorta said all it was gonna say to me. anyway, this record, i was surprised to discover, is pretty upbeat. it's pretty good, too. nice lazy afternoon easy listening music for your 2017. dig it.

c.o.w.b.o.y. j.u.n.k.i.e.s. - 't.h.e. t.r.i.n.i.t.y. s.e.s.s.i.o.n.' (1988)
this band played down tempo rock way before it was cool. bands like low and bedhead and codeine might not even exist if not for this record. ok, that might be an exaggeration. still, listen to this record and think about the fact that it came out in 88 and think about how timeless it sounds. the record was recorded in a church in canada by a band that included three siblings, in one day (ok, except for one song recorded a day or two later) with no mixing and no overdubbing, iwth the band playing live positioned in a circle surrounding one single stereo microphone. the result, indeed, is the feeling of being in the same room as this music as its being played. the set includes a hefty share of covers ranging from traditional folk numbers to elvis to lou reed to hank williams. my favourite track is probably 'i'm so lonesome i could cry'. the title of that song only hints at the devastation of the feeling communicated therein.
