i can tell you from experience that releasing heavy metal in the early 2000s was a strange experience. online music journalism was a far cry from what it has now become. metal communities were very disparate splintered and more conservative than today. this resulted in great bands getting dismissed perhaps more easily than today for lack of any kind of hype machine, and frankly lacking fans educated in different kinds of styles of metal. on a certain level, you wouldn't blame someone for passing over this band just based on their janes addiction type of font on their album cover. be that as it may, throne of nails got written off as a morbid angel rip off band. you'll find multiple reviews of this record comparing it to morbid angel's record called covenant. now some fifteen years after it's release, i personally don't think it sounds much of anything like morbid angel. perhaps it could be thought of as a missing link between morbid angel and portal. the fourth track, i command, sounds a lot like early portal. the point is, this album completely slays. i discovered it randomly on russian social media trying to dig up information on excommunion. i saw excommunion described as throne of nails worship. this seems absurd considering the two bands sound very little alike, and considering this album is so obscure. acts of war is 11 songs in 27 minutes. crazy odd time signatures, wild guitar playing, pick-squals all over the place... it totally slays. too bad this venerable u.k. band only made one record.
