you guys, remember when st. mark's place used to be cool?  i used to go there to get spikes for my boyfriend's jean jacket.  they had all shapes and sizes for cheap.  the place has totally transformed into trustafarian central.  nowadays i gotta get him his spikes online.  i know, lame.  hey, you guys wanna go see this band play in bushwick?  they're playing at this place called the mckibbon lofts.  it's not even a venue, it's just an apartment building where a lot of tatted-up dumpster divers live who ride their track bikes to work eleven months out of the year because they're too cool to be straphangers.  you've seen them texting on their flip phones as they zoom cross the willamsburg bridge.  i heard there's a major bed bug epidemic at this place, so try not to drink too many pbrs because this is not the type of house show where you can just pass out on any old couch.

$38k is the average U.S. Student loan debt. $38k buys a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT V8 crew cab. $38k also will buy you a 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner V8. Rally Red with bucket seats. You can listen to Grimes and consider yourself cool and that's okay. You can also look around a little bit more and see what $38k will get ya. Then you can listen to Virginia Wing and that will be cool too.

context can be of utmost importance with regard to how music strikes a listener.  once upon a time a friendly local record store clerk might recommend you a cd, you might spend fifteen bucks on it, you'd take it home, and you'd listen to it again and again, wrapping your head around it along the way, working out whether you connected with this piece of art you held in your hands.  far be it from me to bemoan the passing of a bygone era.  the pros of the way things are now may in fact outweigh the cons.  still, at present, it seems that a little extra effort might be due to certain musicss beyond the casual couple of clicks.  virginia wing is just such a band.  what do they have to recommend them?  well, they make pop music in this day and age and their music conveys a certain intelligence, and that in and of itself is something of an accomplishment.  the tunes on this record may not be immediately catchy.  still, repeated listens promise to draw the listener in.  that is to say that their music contains more than what meets the ear at first listen.  if you saw this group performing on the street near a bus stop busking for spare change, you might buy their music, and they might just change your world.

here we have a nice life affirming set of tunes from papa m, aka david pajo, the guitarist of slint.  nine songs, the first eight of which are instrumental.  some heavier tunes, some prettier tunes, some rollicking others soothing.  an inspiring release that's enough to fuel any man woman or child's ambitions to be a bedroom musician.

my bloody valentine is overrated.  i said it.  haters can hate what i said just now.  i just... think... mbv... they never really did it for me.  fortunately, in music especially, ideas beget ideas.  as far as shoegaze music goes, skip skip ben ben has it figured out.  they've got all the boxes ticked on this record.  huge cavernous full band sound that just begs to be turned way up, but also sounds great played at low volumes while you're trying to quietly wash last night's dishes and not wake up members of the household who may still be asleep.  the vocals are plaintive, the melodies are melancholic, the rhythms are locked into a lazy lumbering lurch.  perfect depressive music to help you feel less depressed.  

this band has three full length records to its name.  i visited some dark corners of the chinese internet to download all three of this band's records.  the first one is low-fi bedroom pop.  the third one is some kind of carnival inspired experimental pop.  those two did not really grab me.  but this one, their sophmore effort, their shoegaze record, is great through and through from beginning to end.  i say all of this in order to make the point that some bands spend their entire careers perfecting one particular sound.  i love this band even more given the fact that they can just try on a particular genre as though they're donning a costume, and still they play it better than most bands who make album upon album upon album of this music.  serious creative prowess on display here.  did i mention they're from china?  must be something in the air pollution over there.

beijing's future orients break out with guns blazing on 'eat or die', their full length debut for the venerable maybe mars record label.  nice write up of the album here.  i was having a little trouble with the fact that i like this music perhaps because it is something of a warped copy of western guitar music, the original iteration of which is not typically my thing.  for some strange reason, i seem to prefer this band's lyrics served up with the fact that they mispronounce english --seemingly intentionally, given the fact that the back up vocalist seems to be able to say the word 'child' just fine on one particular song -- the third track 'motto' -- while the lead vocalist seems to prefer to pronounce the word as 'chow'.  somehow that kind of playfulness makes the music better.  i struggled with this, until i thought back to how rock n roll really has a rich history of singers apropriating foreign accents and styles.  nowadays contemporary western rock bands seem to tout their influences with the clinical anaesthetic feel of a works sited section in an academic paper.  this band seems to be rougher around the edges and proud of it.  the result is rock n roll with greater sincerity than i have heard in quite a while.

california's black marble, a goth pop duo of bass and synths, made the switch to the ghostly international label over from sub pop.  the album cover might be my least favorite of any album i have liked thus far in 2016.  seriously, that album cover is so bad i almost did not want to deface my site with its ugliness.  also, my friend tells me this band sucks live.  but guess what, they know how to write a nice pop song.  this album is much better than their last one in every way.  it has consistently good tunes and is just about fully rideable with only a few duds.  nice pleasant inoffensive doing the dishes music.  works fine for breastfeeding too.
