i have loved this album more than half my life at this point. dj intelligencer may still have my cassette copy that i bought when i was a young teen in the 90s. i think i bought it on a whim, since they were on the same record label that helmet was on before helmet got a major label deal and ended up on mtv. it turned out i liked tar a lot better. they played alluminum guitars. they were recorded by albini. it turned out that one of them worked at albini's studio. this record is every bit as much about the sound and the atmosphere as it is about the songs. cold dark abrasive sharp and heavy. for me it holds up in a major way. it came into my head out of nowhere not long ago. it was hard to find online but i found it. nearly forgotten to the ages, this gem. those who know, know.

this jammer has one of lauren's favorite all time jams on it which is this little ditty. if you're looking for a tune to dance around to in the kitchen on your linoleum floor, i suggest you look no further. looking back twenty years later it's almost hard for me to believe that this band had made it a decade into their career by the time this record was about ready to come out before someone in the band said, 'guys, we haven't had an album cover with snakeskin on it yet and we need to fix that.'

i remember seeing these guys perform at a basement club in manhattan called the cooler my freshman year of college not long after getting my grubby paws on this cd the day it came out. i remember i ordered a long island iced tea and the bartender looked at me like she wanted to punch me in the face and then she helped like ten other customers and served them their drinks first and took what felt like all day to make mine and then she charged me twenty dollars for it and i felt scandalized but eventually i had no choice but to say to myself to hell with it i'm at a royal trux show for crying out loud loosen up.

discovering a vinyl copy of this record in my wife's record crate the morning after our first date and promptly spinning it on her turntable turned up... i can't exactly say 'that's when i knew...' ...but i will say that this experience was a good indicator of of the size shape and extent of what i wanted my chosen destiny to be.
