This was the first extreme metal release I ever bought. I cought it on cd in 1998. I brought it to my cousin Tommy's house on a Saturday night. I remember I got Kool Keith's Sex Styles that day also. Keith fit the Saturday night party vibe. Meshuggah did not. But I didn't care, I really wanted to listen to Meshuggah. So I went upstairs and listened to it on repeat by myself trying to make sense of the thing. It blew me away then, and this band continues to make my jaw drop more than two decades later.

Obscure Oldschool Danish Death! I can't even find an english language review of this fine ep on the interwebs. This is one of my all time favorites and makes all the digging I've done so worth it to come across new extremes in heaviness such as this gem. Took me months of digging online looking for it til a 320 rip finally turned on on the Russian dark webs. Also I reallllllly love that album art. This record is unreal heavy.

I shall not tell a lie: This band had me at their band name and their airbrushed album art. In truth it's merely servicable nothing to write home about death metal. Has a terrible sounding snare sound which for me is very distracting. I got into this addictive bingeing zone where I had to download every obscure death metal record that I could find from the early to mid 90s that didn't suck. So here you have it for the curious. Allowing myself some editorializing, to me this record represents a good low brow of the people death metal release for the time. Death metal had a lot of standards established by the known greats who had long been playing stadiums by 1995, and this record is a bit outside of that, a bit more back to basics, free of some of the pomp that had begun to gather on the slime ridden scene. Of course that's pure speculation and mere surmise, sir.

I saw this record referenced in a review somewhere and checked it out on a whim and was blown away. If I ever compiled a list of best albums with worst cover art, this would be up there. This cover is almost so bad it's good territory.

Chuck Shuldiner is basically the Johann Sebastian Bach of death metal... the first riff on the first track on this album got stuck in my head for weeks and I could sing it on key right now if you wanted me to and that's not the case for me with most death metal albums to be totally honest with you.

Morbid Angel's albums are released in alphabetical order of the titles, and I feel the need the encourage you to consider a, b, c, d and f as essential listening. Basically their entire studio recordings of full lengths through the 90s are all masterpieces. Duh.
